The ancient city of Metru Nui had been under the attack of the Morbuzakh. The Morbuzakh had invaded the entire district of Ta-Metru while wreaking havoc wherever it went. Not even the Vahki, the law enforcing machines that patrol the island, could keep it under control. No one knew what to do. But someone did seem to know. For in the city, a traitor and a Dark Hunter discussed the prospect of Toa Metru and Great Disks. Toa Lhikan, knowing of darkness in the island's midst, gave a Toa Stone to six Matoran, along with a map to the Great Temple in Ga-Metru. His last visit was to the mask-maker Vakama, working on the Vahi, the Mask of Time, on request of Turaga Dume, elder of Metru Nui. During the visit two Dark Hunters, Krekka and Nidhiki, Lhikan's old enemy, appeared. After a battle, Nidhiki threated to drop Vakama into his forge. Lhikan surrendered, but Nidhiki dropped Vakama anyway. Lhikan managed to save the Matoran before being taken away by the Dark Hunters. Vakama suddenly had a vision. He had had strange visions all his life, yet kept them to himself because others would think him strange. This vision showed Lhikan, telling him to "save the heart of Metru Nui". Following that, Dume made an announcement that Toa Lhikan had disappeared, and made a quick visit to Vakama. Vakama hurriedly hid the Toa Stone from Dume's sight, not sure of what to do. Once Dume left, Vakama journeyed to the Great Temple, going through Ga-Metru and finally reaching a Suva. There, he met the five other Matoran: Matau the Ussal rider, Whenua the Archivist, Nokama the Teacher, Nuju the Seer and Onewa the Carver. They placed the Toa Stones into the six slots on the Toa Suva, and in a flash of blinding light, were transformed into Toa Metru, with new masks and new powers. They all picked a weapon out of a panel which had opened up from the Toa Suva. They also found Toa Disks, which had their Kanohi upon them. Each of the disks harbored a part of their elemental power, although only Vakama actively uses his Toa Disk. Vakama then had another vision. He saw the city falling and the Morbuzakh rising above all, and then a Great Disk flew out of the sky and hit the Morbuzakh and the city rose once again. he also saw six Matoran and their names... the ones who had, or at least knew the location of, the Great Disks. So the Toa Metru split, despite reluctance to follow a vision. They all left for their Metru, promising to meet back there once they had found the Matoran they needed. Vakama went to his Metru to find his mentor, Nuhrii. Nuhrii was a mask-maker who had apprenticed Vakama, but when Vakama surpassed Nuhrii in skill the mask-maker got jealous. Thinking that if he could get the Ta-Metru Great Disk, he could make the greatest mask ever made. At that moment, Nuhrii had been working on a mask, but he broke it and threw it away. Then he received a message that the mask was in fact fine. Vakama had to battle a Morbuzakh vine which had taken control of a Protodermis vat, causing molten Protodermis to spill onto the floor of the furnace. Vakama defeated the particular vine by freezing it. Then he discovered solid Protodermis mixed with crushed Knowledge crystals near a damaged control panel damaged by what had seemed to the worker a four-legged being. Then he traveled to the Protodermis Reclamation Furnace, where Nuhrii had gone to retrieve his mask. He found it flawed, as it should have been, along with a message for Nuhrii, telling him to go to the northern reaches, where he would find out the secret of how to make his dream mask. Vakama followed him, fearing for Nuhrii's life. The northern reaches had been one of the first sites of Morbuzakh attacks, and many of the houses there had been abandoned. He found Nuhrii stuck under some rubble. They were then attacked by a Morbuzakh vine which grabbed Vakama, but luckily Nuhrii had a Kanoka Disk which could help. He used an enlarging disk on the Morbuzakh vine, enlarging it and allowing Vakama to slip out of its grasp before it could adjust. They then slipped away and hurried over to Ga-Metru. Matau, Toa Metru of Air, was thrilled to be a hero and couldn't wait to have stories told of him and him be famous. He made his way over to Le-Metru in search of his Matoran, Orkahm. Orkahm was Chief Ussal Rider, but was slow and meticulous while Matau (who used to be a Ussal rider under his command) was quick, witty and humorous, traits that Orkahm was jealous of. Orkahm, however, had discovered the location of a Great Disk and this was vital to the Toa Metru. So Matau looked all over Le-Metru for him, first narrowly getting out of a trap (a high-speed chute with sealed edges), then searching his the Ussal pen. Eventually, he found a note about Sector 3 of Le-Metru, which was odd considering it was restricted because of Morbuzakh attacks. He went through a marked chute which hurled him on a web of vines where Orkahm was stuck, and Matau got him out, while in the process testing out his powers over the air which also helped them make a narrow escape from the Morbuzakh. He also discovered Ahkmou had wanted his disk and he had been followed by a brute and a four-legged being. Nuju journeyed back to Ko-Metru and found a Ko-Metru map with a marked chute station in Ehrye's house. Then he started his search for Ehrye. Ehrye was a messenger for the scholars, but really wanting to be a scholar. Nuju, a seer, didn't think he was ready. However, usually it was difficult not to find him because he often barged in unexpectedly. Now he couldn't find him. So Nuju traveled to the chute station, Where he found a Po-Matoran hammer and he was directed to a Knowledge Tower. There he asked some Scholars, and one said he saw Ehrye go up to the top levels of a Knowledge Tower. So Nuju began to head up there, and eventually saw him-- underneath tons of smartly placed blocks. He fixed a crack under the Tower Ehrye was trapped. Then, he managed to get the blocks off Ehrye without them crumbling on him. After a slight confrontation about Ehrye's knowledge of the Great Disk and discovering he had talked to Ahkmou about the disk, Nuju and the Matoran started for the Great Temple. Nokama went a short ways away to the main area of Ga-Metru, her home Metru. She saw many old friends who didn't recognize her or sidled away when she tried to make conversation, and she suddenly realized how lonely being a Toa could be. She resumed her search for Vhisola, a former student of hers whom she had a stormy relationship with, even though they were friends of sorts. She went to Vhisola's dwelling and found a journal entry telling Nokama that Vhisola was mad at her because of the fact that now that she was a Toa, she would never get to spend time with Nokama now and impress her; and then narrowly escaped a Bordakh Vahki who attempted to capture her because they did not know whether this new being was friend or foe. She left and went to Vhisola's school area, and found a broken lab destroyed by what had seemed to the workers a four-legged being with notes strewn about the Great disks. This led her back to Vhisola's home where she found a safe that had notes of the Morbuzakh. Nokama left hastily and found Vhisola, saving her from a fall off a building. After discovering an Ahkmou's letter had led her into a trap, they headed for the Great Temple. Whenua journeyed to Onu-Metru in an attempt to find Tehutti. Like Whenua, he was a veteran Archivist and had many large exhibits. But he longed to find something more, something that would make him known and would make the Archives even more complete. Whenua found a letter from Vhisola offering a Nui-Jaga in exchange from a Great Disk. He also found Tehutti's favorite exhibit case damaged. He went to the exhibit docks but fell into the sub-levels, where darker secrets loomed. A Rahkshi of Heat Vision got out of its Stasis Chamber and began stalking Whenua, resulting in a narrow escape. Whenua got into the Muaka pens and let one loose, and then got the Muaka and the Rahkshi into a fight (Muaka and Rahkshi are natural enemies). He then found Tehutti who was nearly cowering in a corner of the area where the Muaka and Rahkshi were fighting. Whenua saved Tehutti and left the Archives, heading back to the Great Temple. Onewa hurried over to Po-Metru in search of a fellow carver, Ahkmou. Ahkmou was carver that worked hard, but had always gotten second place with Onewa around. He had found a lot of items in Ahkmou's desk and discovered Ahkmou had received a visit from two beings, one huge and a four-legged one. Then he found a map with a marked sculpture. Onewa found Ahkmou there. When Onewa reached Ahkmou and asked him what in Mata Nui he was doing, Ahkmou fumbled a little, and used the appearance of the Dark Hunter Nidhiki as a distraction to race away. Onewa followed him into Chute Station that had been marked on the sculpture which led to Ta-Metru and cornered him there. Once there, Ahkmou spotted Nidhiki again and realized he had to go to the Great Temple with Onewa. The Matoran were brought to the Great Temple. There the Toa Metru discussed everything and deduced that Ahkmou was the traitor based on evidence found all over the island. Onewa wanted to pound him, but Vakama held him back. And they resolved to find the Great Disks. Vakama traveled to the Fire Pits with Onewa, Nuhrii and Ahkmou, following the clue that Nokama deciphered from the inscriptions in the Great Temple about the Great Disks, which told Vakama that to find the Ta-Metru Great Disk, he must embrace the root of fire. He and Nuhrii both knew what that meant: going to the Fire Pits of Ta-Metru, six craters that were the source of the fires that powered the forges of Ta-Metru. While they were journeying, Onewa was attacked by a Morbuzakh vine, which Vakama froze using a disk, the Matoran ran away, and Nidhiki blasted the Toa unconscious into a Protodermis Reclamation Furnace. Luckily, Vakama managed to contain the fire because they were only knocked out briefly. Unfortunately, Nidhiki got away. The Toa found the Matoran again, and Vakama and Nuhrii snuck into the fire pits while Onewa caused a distraction for the Nuurakh Vahki squads guarding the area. Nuhrii directed them to the Fire pit where they managed to grab the Ta-Metru Great Disk, but not before narrowly escaping two Morbuzakh vines that had appeared in the fire pits. Nuhrii managed to use Vakama's last disk, with the "Reconstitute at random" power. The disk transformed the vines, giving Vakama and Nuhrii a chance to climb out. The vines rose from the pit, now a horrible fanged monster, but the pit erupted at that moment and Vakama and Nuhrii escaped with the Great Disk. They then proceeded to Po-Metru, heading for the Sculpture Fields to find the Po-Metru Great Disk, by seeking a "mountain in balance". Although delayed by a Tunneler, which they defeated turning it to glass, they managed to find a statue that seemed like a pyramid turned upside-down, in perfect balance. Although he nearly died, Onewa managed to grab the disk from atop the mountain. A funny story that Vakama told about that incident was that the where the Great disk was hidden saved him from the falling sculpture. After that, they headed for the Great Temple. Whenua and Nuju journeyed to the Archives of Onu-Metru in search of the Onu-Metru Great Disk, left only with the ominous clue that 'no door must be left unopened.' Although there were thousands of doors in the archives, Tehutti knew what level the disk was on. So they proceeded into the level, and met with a gigantic Ussal Crab, which they defeated "giving it a headache" using Whenua's drills, Frost Leechs, a Two-Headed Tarakava and a shape-shifting creature, which was defeated by chilling it. After using all of their powers, intelligence and hard-earned friendship to find the Onu-Metru Great Disk (in a supply closet), they proceeded for Ko-Metru. At Ko-Metru, they went from Knowledge Tower to Knowledge Tower in search of the Ko-Metru Great Disk, left only with the clue, 'In Ko-Metru, find where sky and ice are joined.' Tehutti and Ehrye were left behind, largely because Tehutti had been struck by a Keerakh, losing all sense of time and space. They traveled through the Metru, evading the Keerakh and swinging from ice cables. Eventually, they found the location of the Great Disk, and while Whenua caused a serious distraction below by tunneling through a road, making the Keerakh leave the area, Nuju grabbed the Great Disk from the middle of an icicle hanging from one of the highest Knowledge Towers. They then proceeded to the Great Temple. Nokama, Matau, Vhisola and Orkahm headed out to the main section of Ga-Metru, but were stopped by the sight of a few Ga-Matoran that had been struck by the Bordakh Vahki squads of Ga-Metru, utter slaves to law and order. Matau diverted them away by flying away, and the others quickly left. They met again at a mini-dam for the Proto Canal, and to avoid the Vahki, they decided to swim through the dam. Unfortunately, the spill gate had already opened when they proceeded to open it and a flood of liquid Protodermis spilled through, knocking them down through the canal. Luckily, Nokama saved the others and Matau who nearly drowned. They then went back toward the Great Temple, knowing that clue, 'In Ga-Metru, go beyond the depths of Toa before.' Vhisola knew that meant go below the Great Temple. So she went below, and while she was below Matau and the two Matoran were attacked by Bordakh. Meanwhile, Nokama had found the Ga-Metru Great Disk, wedged between two outcroppings. She grabbed it and started swimming away, not knowing that those outcroppings had in fact been teeth from a massive Rahi. Matau blasted the Vahki into the water just as Nokama shot out of the water, causing the Rahi that had been following her ready to eat her to crash into the Vahki. Nokama, Matau, Orkahm and Vhisola hastily left the scene before the Bordakh could regain their senses. In Le-Metru, Orkahm led the way to the place where the Great Disk should be. However, they did not find it there. Matau was confused because 'The Great Disk of Le-Metru will be all around you when you find it'. Orkahm said it must be in a Force Sphere, a sphere of magnetic energy that had curled in on itself and would suck in anything that passed by it into a swirling vortex of energy. Eventually it would implode, taking the chute--and a Great Disk--with it. So Matau used a chute map to figure out where it should be and realized it would be coming through 'The Notch', a mess of chutes that was ancient and made long before anyone had tried making sense of the chute system. Matau believed it would slow down for the Notch, so he jumped in when it came whistling past. Making a few blind attempts, he managed to find the Great Disk in a whirl of flying objects and tools that were trapped in the sphere. But then he and Orkahm realized something: the sphere would not slow for the Notch, but implode and take the tangle of chutes (and Matau) with it. Unable to break out of the Force Sphere, he used his air powers to create a vortex of air and blast him out of the sphere. With the two Great Disks between them, they then proceeded to the Great Temple. Vakama and Onewa were stopped near the Great Temple by a squad of Bordakh on the look out for them. Despite great fear of the Vahki, they got the trembling Nuhrii to go out in the open and tell the Bordakh he had seen the Toa Metru on the other side of the Metru, causing trouble and stopping work. Then they got in, where they meet up with the other Toa. Using their gained knowledge from Ehrye, Vhisola and Nuhrii, they deduced that the Morbuzakh's King Root would be in the Great Furnace. So they traveled to Ta-Metru, bringing the Matoran with them. In Ta-Metru, they were nearly discovered by a Vahki squad, and hid in a abandoned forge. Suddenly, something began to fall from the ceiling. Nokama looked up, and saw thousands of Morbuzakh seeds. When the seeds landed, vines burst from within to entangle the Matoran and the Toa Metru. Nuju managed to use an icicle to tear at the vines and free the others. They made it outside, where they brought the building down. At the Great Furnace, the Toa Metru entered the structure to find small, young vines growing in the entrance. At first they wondered why the Morbuzakh would leave them unprotected, but they were wrong, as thorns began to shoot out of the walls. The Toa blocked the attack but were being defeated, and the Matoran were cut off from escaping. At this point, Tehutti showed the other Matoran something he had learned in the Archives, how to merge into what is commonly known as a Matoran Nui. They (or 'it') knocked away the Morbuzakh vines and brought down the door to the interior of the furnace. The Toa Metru entered, and the Matoran Nui made it out of the building. Outside they separated, and Ahkmou fled into the shadows. Inside the furnace, the Toa Metru discovered that the King Root was intelligent and could talk. It spoke of its plot to take over the city, driving the Matoran to the center of the island, making the Matoran its slaves and servants. The Toa Metru used all of their powers to defend their home, and in the end unleashed a great power from the Great Disks which enveloped the King Root, cutting it off from its other vines and roots and rendering it useless. The Toa Metru hastily left, exhausted and nearly powerless, leaving behind a blackened mass of a screaming plant, which collapsed. All over the city, the vines withered away, and the Great Furnace was destroyed. Triumphant, the Toa Metru headed for the Coliseum, where they could show that they were indeed heroes of Metru Nui. They were truly Toa Metru. But on their way, they found an anxious Onu-Matoran named Nuparu, who told Whenua that he had gone below the Archives in hopes of finding some Rahkshi armor for his latest invention, and instead discovered a leak in the thick walls that protected the Archives from the ocean. If the leak spread, the Archives would be washed away. So they traveled to the "Fikou Web", the nickname given to the maintenance tunnels that ran beneath the Archives. Whenua lead them down, where they were confronted by two Rahkshi with the powers of weather control and insect control. They defeated one, but the other escaped. The Toa Metru continued, never knowing that they were being watched... At the edge of the Fikou Web, the Toa Metru split up to search for the leak. Then things started getting strange... Nokama was attacked by the insect control Rahkshi, which knocked her unconscious. She woke up to find the Rahkshi gone. Nokama had thought there was something strange about that Rahkshi. When its head plate opened, no Kraata was inside. But a Rahkshi needed a Kraata to operate... Meanwhile, "Nokama" attacked Vakama, "Vakama" attacked Onewa, "Onewa" attacked Matau, who was discovered by Nuju, and Matau said had "Onewa" defeated him using fire. Vakama found Nokama and attacked, but then Onewa shows up and attacks Vakama, who is joined by Matau and Nuju. After some sense on Nuju's part, they stopped and tried to think. Whenua then showed up, and told them that what was attacking them was a shape-shifting Rahi named Krahka, who could take the full powers of whoever she impersonated. Krahka wished to drive the Toa out of her territory. Although Whenua said they should leave, the Toa Metru decided to confront this threat. So Whenua lead them on, where they found a bridge over a chasm filled with Stone Rats. Matau saved Vakama who had thought to sacrifice himself. After barely getting over, Whenua lead them through a strange tunnel of darkness, where all the Toa except Nokama and Whenua were taken away, one by one, by Rahkshi. "Whenua" then revealed himself to be Krahka, and left Nokama to fight three Rahkshi. Spotting a leak and using one of the Rahkshi's electricity powers, she managed to defeat two of them and summoned enough water power to bring down the third. She then found each of the other Toa, until they found Nuju, who was trapped in an electrical field. Vakama used a teleportation disk to teleport the field away(there had been some worry that Nuju himself would also be teleported) and the five then set out to rescue Whenua. In a tunnel, they came upon several lava eels, who surrounded them. Vakama assured them they would be no threat until a quake shook the tunnel. The Toa managed to grab a hold of a Protodermis pipe just before the lava eels burnt the ground through. Krahka in her form of the combination of all six Toa Metru Below, they saw a massive Rahi pacing back and forth. Later, they discovered that this Rahi was the Tahtorak. After getting away, Nuju scouted ahead, where he discovered Krahka's lair and Whenua stuck to the ceiling. "Nokama" then encased Nuju in a block of stone. Sensing danger, the remaining four Toa set up a trap for Krahka, who came back as "Nuju". But Krahka got away, taking the form of a lava eel. So they started digging a tunnel to the surface, making lots of noise to attract the shape-shifter. Sure enough, she came, this time in the form of a creature made of smoke, who brought the Toa Metru back to her lair. There, Krahka revealed her plan to take over Metru Nui. The Toa Metru freed Whenua and Nuju and attacked, but Krahka became a combination of all six Toa. She became confused by the logic and minds of six separate beings, but still managed to fight. Nokama confused her further, telling her that if she did as she threatened to, the beings above would flee, and she would be the ruler of...nothing. The Toa Metru were able to bring her down, but she escaped again, in the form of a lava eel. Vakama was close enough to stop her, he let her go, because she was, more or less, simply defending her home. Seeing what he saw as a reflection of themselves, what they might become, if fueled by too much anger. The Toa Metru sealed the cracks they came to find, and went back up to the surface. In the Coliseum, Turaga Dume was watching a Matoran Akilini game when the Toa Metru entered. The game was halted, and the Toa Metru walked onto the arena floor, holding the Great Disks above their heads. The Matoran cheered, but Dume was taken aback when he saw Vakama, now a Toa. Although the Toa Metru showed Dume the Great Disks, the elder of Metru Nui told them "Toa must prove themselves with deeds, not simple gifts." Angered, the Toa gave their Disks to Vakama, for they had been sure that they would prove to Dume that they were Toa. Dume told them to cross the arena floor, which began to shift dangerously. The Toa Metru tried, but they were brought down until Dume ordered for the arena to stop. The Matoran jeered the Toa, and Dume called them impostors, responsible for Lhikan's disappearance. Vakama spotted Nidhiki and Krekka standing next to Dume, and realized he had betrayed his city. The Turaga then ordered the Vahki to capture the Toa, and had the arena floor turned into a whirlpool. Onewa, Whenua and Nuju got sucked in, but Vakama, Nokama and Matau managed to bring down a huge statue of Lhikan on top of the Vahki and escape. The Toa Metru ran out of the coliseum and jumped into a chute. Nidhiki and Krekka went after them. The Toa Metru left their chute in Ga-Metru, but the Vahki Bordakh realized that they left and cornered them on top of a chute support tower. A Bordakh blasted Nokama with its staff power, turning Nokama into a tool of the Vahki. She pushed Vakama off the tower, he would have died, but his thoughts activated his tool, the disk launcher strapped to his back, turning on its flight power. He then fired two shrinking disks on the Vahki below. Those Vahki were out now. Matau and Nokama struggled on top of the tower, and Nokama fell, but Vakama caught her. Matau then managed to get away, leading the Vahki through a chute. A squad of Vorzakh had demolished a portion of the chute ahead, but Matau slides down, while the Vahki zoomed by and flied out of the broken chute. The three Toa then fled to Le-Metru. Meanwhile, Onewa, Whenua and Nuju were being escorted to the prison of the Dark Hunters by a squad of Rorzakh. The Toa quietly planned to run in one spot but didn't realize that Whenua was hit by Rorzakh's staff powers. In the spot they agreed to start running, they quickly ran, Rorzakh after them. But after hours of running the Toa ran into the prison of the Dark Hunters and were about to turn back when the Rorzakh shut the door behind them. They were trapped. Matau, Vakama and Nokama were in Le-Metru and sneaked in to a cargo airship. They knew that the Vahki were watching the streets but not the airships. Inside, Vakama realized that Morbuzakh was just a cover for something else, and that Lhikan probably suspected something like this but never had a chance to tell, since he was captured. While talking about this, they didn't realize the Vahki Nuurakh were in the airship. And soon the Nuurakh squad did attack the Toa. The Vahki were defeated but the Toa weren't safe in the airship yet. Nidhiki and Krekka had found the airship and guessed that the Toa were there. They were right. They attacked the Toa Metru after breaking into the ship in mid air. Krekka managed to use a freezing disk to freeze Vakama. Vakama was falling on the floor of the airship and would have got broken, due to the ice around him, but Matau saved him, grabbing him. The Toa Metru fought a lot but Vakama got to teleport Krekka out of the airship with a teleportation disk in the end. Nidhiki was also defeated, and he left to look for Krekka. Vakama and Matau then used their powers of flight to take Nokama out of the airship which was over Ta-Metru at the moment. Once safely on ground, Vakama has a vision of himself fighting a monstrous being that has beaten the other Toa already. It then takes Vakama with an energy hand and starts to squeeze him... suddenly he's in another place, trapped, hanging from a web and Nidhiki comes and talks to Vakama. Then the place changes again as Vakama finds himself in Nuhrii's living room and Lhikan is talking to him as a Toa. Then Vakama finds himself in a cave where Dume talks to him and takes to a place where there is a large green web. Vakama's fellow Toa emerge from it and call him a traitor. Then Vakama sees his image on a mirror... but his face is monstrous there... Vakama woke up from his vision and soon after that, the creature called Tahtorak emerged from the ground, demanding an answer to a question. The Toa didn't know the question and so a fight began... The Toa fought the Tahtorak but were easily beaten away. Matau attempted to get the Rahi's attention so Vakama could fire a Kanoka disk. The Tahtorak grabbed a chimney and threw it at Matau, who escaped the projectile's path. Vakama fired the disk but it didn't affect the great beast. Then some Nuurakh started to fly to the scene, but the Tahtorak caused some rocks to fall on them. Vakama then got an idea. Tahtorak was a really strong Rahi... and really heavy too. And damage had already been done under it. Vakama had three weakening disks and he gave one to Nokama and Matau. The three Toa threw their disks at the ground causing the Rahi to fall down below, as the ground was too weak to hold. Vakama, Matau and Nokama took a chute to Ko-Metru, fleeing more approaching Nuurakh. But Nidhiki and Krekka were back and forced a chute manager named Kongu to reverse the flow of the chutes. Kongu did this, although he feared that the chutes would be destroyed by doing that. The chutes weren't destroyed and the reversing was successful. Inside the chutes Vakama Nokama and Matau realized that they were going back and they acted. Nokama grabbed from a chute support with her Hydro Blades, Vakama grabbing her legs and Matau's foot. Soon they were hanging by the support, outside the chute as Matau had cut them a way outside. Then Vakama received a vision about Lhikan's spirit star. He quickly awoke out of this short vision and saw a chute support tower nearby which gave him an idea. He asked Nokama if they could get there and Nokama started to swing back and forth, Vakama and Matau swinging as well. She then let go and all the three Toa, still holding each other, flew together towards the support tower, and Nokama clung to it with her Hydro Blades. But just when they thought that everything was fine, Vakama lost his grip of Matau's foot and he fell towards the ground... but he survived, thanks to his Aero slicers which he could use to fly. He was flying, victorious but then bumped onto a poster of Turaga Dume. He however got down safely just as Vakama and Nokama too. Once on the ground, while Nokama and Matau were talking, Vakama looked at the Great Disks he had with him. He then made a discovery, the disks could be fused together. He fused them all together and it formed a Disk of Time. Now he was close to the answer of how to make a mask of time. Nokama and Matau come to him but instead of telling about the disk of time, Vakama told them about the vision he saw when all the three of them were hanging by the chute support. The vision was about Lhikan's spirit star, and they saw it in the sky moving towards Po-Metru. The three Toa stowed aboard a Vahki transport which was heading towards Po-Metru too. Meanwhile Onewa, Whenua, and Nuju were trying to get out of their cell. Just when they were about to give up hope, a Turaga came out of the shadows. He told them that they could get out but they needed their mask powers. So the three Toa started some self discovery led by this mysterious Turaga. They started to do things like carrying rocks and walk with eyes covered up. In the Vahki transport Vakama, Nokama and Matau discovered many strange spherical metal storage containers. Vakama then saw a vision of a Ga-Matoran inside a container; her eyes glowing bright red. Vakama woke up from his vision traumatized, and opened one of the containers. There was nothing inside. When the Vahki transport reached an Assemblers' Village, the three Toa jumped out and started to look for clues about Lhikan's current location. Surprisingly, nobody was seen anywhere... until Krekka suddenly attacked the Toa. Nokama's Hydro Blades protected the Toa while they found cover. Matau however went and charged towards Krekka, avoiding his blasts. Nidhiki came to the scene then and trapped Matau in an energy web. Vakama and Nokama went to help their friend when suddenly the earth started to shake. A herd of Kikanalo swept through and the Dark Hunters fled. The Toa however were in trouble, for the Kikanalo thought that they were enemies. The Toa ran but suddenly Nokama's mask started to glow and she stopped and turned towards the Kikanalo that were running towards her. The Kikanalo suddenly stopped -- it appeared Nokama had learned her mask power just then: translation, which allowed her to talk with Rahi too. Vakama and Matau came to Nokama and they asked the Kikanalo leader some questions. They learned that Lhikan had been taken somewhere nearby and they rode the Kikanalo which aided them to find the place where Lhikan was held. Meanwhile, in the Dark Hunter Prison, Whenua and Onewa started to argue, as they were frustrated about the seemingless tasks given to them by the mysterious Turaga. Onewa's mask then started to glow and he commanded Whenua to sit down. Onewa had discovered his mask power, mind control, while Nuju had also discovered his, telekinesis. Nuju tore down the wall of the jail and moved it between his arguing friends. The three Toa and the mysterious Turaga escaped through the hole. Vakama, Matau and Nokama had found a mysterious entrance to a place that they thought must be the place where Lhikan was. Armies of Zadakh were guarding it. The Toa and their Kikanalo steeds confronted them. Matau and his Kikanalo steed, however, went to confront the two Dark Hunters who had entered the fight. Matau discovered his mask power of shapeshifting and used it to confuse the Dark Hunters. He appeared to Krekka as Nidhiki once and to Nidhiki as Krekka next. The two hunters then met and were really confused. They saw Matau riding on his Kikanalo away, victoriously. Nokama tricked a part of the Zadakh army to run and fall off an edge of a canyon while many Kikanalo who were with Vakama used their "sonic powers" to blow the rest of the army away. The Toa then met and went into the cavern while Kikanalo covered their tracks by bringing down the entrance. Nivawk however saw all this and went to tell all to Dume. Dume then summoned all the Matoran of Metru-Nui to the coliseum. Whenua, Nuju, Onewa, and the Turaga took a shortcut in the tunnels in the mouth of a Troller which Onewa controlled with his newly discovered mask powers. Now it was Whenua's turn to discover his mask powers: it was nightvision. He then led the way through the dark tunnels, when suddenly a Vahki jumped on him. The Vahki, however, was really the shapeshifting Matau who soon revealed himself and went back to his real form laughing. Vakama and Nokama then appeared, all the Toa were together again. They exchanged their tales and the mysterious Turaga revealed himself to be Turaga Lhikan. He was disappointed when Vakama told him that he thought that Lhikan was the heart of Metru-Nui. Lhikan explained that the Matoran were the heart of Metru-Nui and Vakama left the others, with a lot of doubt in himself. Nokama tried to cheer him up but Lhikan hold her back, for Vakama had to find his destiny himself. The real Turaga Dume sleeping in a Matoran PodVakama saw many of those pods he had seen before in the Vahki transport where he, Matau and Nokama had traveled secretly to get to Po-Metru. He touched one of the pods and it opened... and revealed sleeping Turaga Dume. Vakama realized that Lhikan's theory of a false Dume was true, and somebody was all behind this. But then a group of Vahki came from the depths of the tunnel, where our friends were. The Toa couldn't save Dume now but promised to do it later. All the Toa and Lhikan ran away from the Vahki and got to a chamber. Whenua closed its door; but it wouldn't hold the Vahki for long. Then Vakama saw a Vahki transport which they could use but a lot of Lohrak attacked them. Vakama gestured that enough of their elemental powers had returned now and the Toa used them to defeat the Lohrak. The Toa then got to the transport just before the Vahki broke the door and stormed in. The Toa escaped the underground tunnels with the help of Whenua's Toa tools and they started driving towards the Coliseum to confront the false Turaga Dume. They noticed while watching the empty city that the ancient legend of the Great Shadow was coming true. Makuta, taking off the KirilIn the coliseum the false Dume ordered the Matoran to go to the strange pods. Matoran did what was told and the Vahki took the pods away and stored them under the Coliseum. Then the Toa arrived and confronted the false Dume, who took off his Kiril and revealed himself to be Makuta. He then casted the Great Shadow, the eclipse that brought Metru-Nui to darkness and the earthquake that shattered Metru Nui as the Great Spirit Mata Nui fell into slumber. Whenua then used his mask powers and discovered that the Matoran were in the pods under the coliseum. After the Toa Metru used the Vahki transport to get there, they attached six of the pods to the transport and began their escape pursued by the Vahki and the Dark Hunters. Outside the Coliseum Nidhiki and Krekka attacked the transport, Krekka distracting the driver, Matau while Nidhiki threatened Lhikan, but Nuju stepped in between them. Onewa used his mask powers and made Krekka to jump on Nidhiki so that the two of them fell off the transport. The two hunters were then pulled by Makuta to his own being to add to his own power. The same thing happened to Nivawk too. The Toa were driving towards the Great Temple to find some protection for the Matoran but an army of Vahki Bordakh were guarding it. When they saw the Toa, they started to shoot them with their staff powers. The Toa drove off the bridge that led to the temple and fell down to the water below. The Bordakh thought that they were dead; however, later the Toa emerged from the waters, the Matoran Pods floated and brought the Vahki support on the surface too. The Toa started to sail towards the Great Barrier, and while sailing, Vakama made the Vahi out of the Disk of Time. He then saw a vision... a vision that told him to head for a crack in the great barrier. Then a horrible sight came to our heroes' eyes. Makuta stood on top of a cliff and confronted the Toa Metru. He made solid Protodermis pillars rise from the silver sea. The Vahki transport almost crashed on one of them but Onewa used his Proto Pitons to break it down. Then Nokama used her Hydro Blades to grab one of the pillars and make the transport turn, avoiding one of the pillars. Nuju used his mask powers to move Vakama to Makuta while the others would get the Matoran to safety. Makuta however made one of the pillars collapse in front of the transport, making Nuju lose control and the Matoran pods fall off the transport. Vakama had already reached the cliff where Makuta was, however, and confronted him with the Vahi. Makuta tempted him, asking him to join him and his brothers. Vakama refused and started using the Vahi to slow Makuta when he tried to grab Vakama with his energy hand. Vakama however lost control of the mask and he was trapped in the slow motion effect himself too. Lhikan showed up then, blocking Makuta's energy hand with his shield. Makuta added the shield to his power now, instead of Vakama. The blast was deadly for Lhikan, and Vakama, who had dropped the mask which had flown to another cliff, witnessed Lhikan's death. Lhikan gave him his mask and his last words were: "I'm glad to call you brother, Toa Vakama." Vakama discovered his mask power, invisibility and went to confront the master of shadows. Makuta was about to put on the Vahi when Vakama arrived. He quickly launched a Kanoka with his disk launcher and knocked the Vahi out of the hands of Makuta. The Vahi fell into the sea. Enraged, Makuta started to attack Vakama with his energy hand. Thanks to Vakama's mask powers, it was hard for Makuta to track him. Vakama tricked Makuta many times and then deactivated his mask power when he was standing on the front of a large boulder. Makuta fired his energy hand again, but Vakama dodged it. The energy hand pulled the large boulder towards Makuta and he couldn't reverse it. The boulder smashed Makuta to a wall. Weakly, he told Vakama that he couldn't defeat him alone, since Toa Lhikan couldn't. Then the other Toa showed up and told Makuta that Vakama was not alone. The six Toa Metru combined their elemental powers and imprisoned Makuta in a Protodermis prison. The Toa sighed in relief and watched as Lhikan's Spirit Star separated into six new stars. The Toa Metru really were Toa. They went back to the Vahki transport below, where Whenua, Onewa, Nuju, Matau and Nokama had attached the Matoran pods to it once more while Vakama was confronting Makuta. The Toa then started the transport and started to sail towards the crack in the great barrier. Vakama named their new ship "The Lhikan" by the now deceased protector of Metru Nui. A large bio-quake shook the Bionicle universe. Voya Nui shot off of the Southern Mainland into the sea above and spilled much water onto the mainland. The Brotherhood of Makuta was also badly disrupted by the quake, but how so isn't known. In The Pit, the walls were broken, setting free all of the prisoners. The quake also hurt the Pit jailer, Hydraxon. After being weakened he was killed by Takadox. The quake damaged many parts of Metru Nui as well. The Archives were destroyed and the Rahi in there escaped. In Le-Metru, the cables and mechanisms fell apart, turning it into a mechanized jungle. Ga-Metru's schools were ravaged by the quake as well. Experiments in the labs were set free, allowing them to roam in the night. The Temple of the Great Spirit was also damaged. Most of Ta-Metru was overcome from lava in the foundries. The Ko-Metru Knowledge Towers fell. The least damaged of the Metrus was Po-Metru, being mostly rock and canyons. Things were a mess. On the way to Mata Nui, the Toa Metru take a wrong turn and were nearly melted by a Rahi that emits intense heat. The Toa fight some Vahki that had chased them from Metru Nui. After defeating the Vahki, Nokama scouted ahead and discovers a trap set for them, and she heads back to warn the others. The Lhikan is brought to a stop, tangled in what seems to be seaweed. Nuju trying to remove the Lhikan realized it was actually alive as it knocked off his mask. A powerful current suddenly pulled The Lhikan away. Nokama, who had anchored herself to the cave wall, saw The Lhikan go by her, but soon saw Nuju and rescued him getting his mask back to him. A whirlpool nearly destroyed the boat. After the whirlpool disappears, Nokama and Nuju catch up with the others.. The Toa encountered many huge dangerous Rahi in an enormous cave with a lake In it. Kralhi captured the Toa. Mavrah spoke with the Toa, using a Rahi that detected Kanohi power usage to be sure the Toa didnt attack him. Whenua revealed that these were the Rahi which mysteriously disappeared from Metru Nui years before, along with Mavrah. The Kralhi that long ago went missing were now working for him. Vakama managed to escape invisible. The Toa Metru battled Mavrahs Rahi, Kralhi and more Vahki that followed them all the way. Whenua and Onewa convince Mavrah to stop this battle, but witnessed him get swept away by a massive wave from the Rahi. The Toa Metru escape, but the pod containing the Matoran Ahkmou is lost in the water. The Toa arrived in on what will be Mata Nui and seal the tunnel behind them. On Mata Nui, the five Matoran capsules are left in safety on the beach next to what would be someday Ga-Koro, the Toa Metru place a portion of their power into 6 stones. These Toa Stones of Mata Nui are hidden in the island and the Toa find good locations for villages to be build. The Toa Metru return the way back to Metru Nui to rescue the other Matoran, this time traveling through a tunnel in which they saw a Nui-Jaga run out of. On the way they encounter hordes of mutated Rahi, all running from the underground. They also find a nest of sleeping Bohrok. They also encounter a small pool of Energized Protodermis, a powerful mutagenic type of Protodermis. They discover that what it does not mutate, it destroys. Then they fight a Kranua, turning it into glass. Matau then, annoyed with Vakama, flies away and gets fused with the rock by a Rahi serpent and Onewa frees him.. The Toa encounter the Rahi Nui that wanted their powers because they are food for it. Before they defeat it, it stings Nokama with a deadly poison. Then Nuju discovers the Rahi Nui can increase its volume, but not its mass and makes it, along with Vakama, get too large and it drifts apart. The Toa decide to keep going hoping to find a cure in Metru Nui for Nokama. The Toa Metru encounter Karzahni, a giant moss-like plant who was the prototype for the Morbuzakh. He offers to cure Nokama in return for some Energized Protodermis. So the Toa search on trough tunnels and chambers, finding a pool of the powerful substance, as well as a vial that seems to be able to hold Energized Protodermis without being destroyed. they get the vial, but a strange creature makes Onewa talk about Visorak, but no one understands what it means. Before the Toa could get some of the Protodermis, an entity, which appeared to be made entirely of Energized Protodermis, rises up from the pool and attacks the Toa. Eventually the Toa defeat it and take some Energized Protodermis. Karzahni heals Nokama and drinks the Energized Protodermis hoping to turn into something more powerful. But it has destroyed him, for it is not its destiny to be mutated. Meanwhile, the Visorak Hordes invade Metru Nui, covering it in web and taking over the coliseum. !TJ%P

2004 was a flashback year and told the stories about Toa Metru and the island Metru Nui. It was also the first year of the Bionicle Adventures story arc. The 2004 story was told in the following books: BIONICLE Adventures 1: Mystery of Metru Nui, BIONICLE Adventures 2: Trial By Fire, BIONICLE Adventures 3: The Darkness Below, BIONICLE Adventures 4: Legends of Metru Nui, (and the movie with the same title) BIONICLE Adventures 5: Voyage of Fear, and BIONICLE Adventures 6: Maze of Shadows.

Story
One thousand years before the 2001-2003 storylines took place, on the island of Metru Nui, a vicious sentient plant known as the Morbuzahk was trying to take over the city. Matoran were disappearing, and many places were becoming too dangerous to live in. But Toa Lhikan, the city's last living Toa, created six Toa Stones and delivered them to six Matoran: Vakama, Matau, Nokama, Whenua, Onewa, and Nuju, one from each of the six metru of the city. When he delivered Vakama's, two Dark Hunters named Nidhiki and Krekka attacked and kidnapped Lhikan. Shortly after this, Turaga Dume (little did Vakama know at the time that it was actually the Makuta posing as Turaga Dume) entered Vakama's forge and asked him to make a Mask of Time before the upcoming Akilini game. Using these Toa Stones at Ga-Metru's Great Temple, they became the Toa Metru. Toa Vakama told them of a vision he had: they must find six Matoran: Nuhrii, Orkahm, Vhisola, Tehutti, Ahkmou, and Ehrye, as well as the six Great Disks, the locations of which were known by the Matoran.

They split up and each went to their own metru to find the Matoran with the same element as them. All of the Matoran save Ahkmou (who was trying to hide, not be rescued) had been trapped by Nidhiki under something (or in Vhisola's case, hanging off the side of a building) and the Toa Metru managed to save them, some of them meeting with Vahki that wanted to capture and interrogate them. When they all met up again, they determined that one of them was a traitor: Ahkmou.

The Toa Metru and the Matoran of their elements split up into three groups: Vakama, Nuhrii, Onewa, and Ahkmou on one team, Whenua, Tehutti, Nuju, and Ehrye on another, and Nokama, Vhisola, Matau, and Orkahm on the last. After contending with Vahki, they found the Great Disks and went to destroy the Morbuzakh with them. The Toa Metru headed to the Great Furnace in Ta-Metru where they deduced the Morbuzahk's king root must be. The Matoran combined themselves into a Matoran Nui to allow the Toa Metru to get past the rapidly-sprouting Morbuzakh seeds in the Great Furnace, and they passed to fight the king root. After exhausting their elemental energies, they had to use the Great Disks, and they destroyed the king root.

They headed to the Coliseum to present themselves to Turaga Dume. But on their way, a Matoran named Nuparu informed them of a leak in the Archives of Onu-Metru. So the Toa Metru headed there to plug the leak, planning to present themselves to Dume after doing that. In the Archives, they encountered many Rahi and Rahkshi, all of them hostile. When they reached the Fikou web, a large tunnel system in the Archives, they split up and encountered a shapeshifting Rahi called a Krahka that attempted to become them and turn them against one another. Finally, they tricked her, and she attacked them using all of their forms combined into one. Using their powers together, they defeated her, but Vakama allowed her to escape.

Finally, the Toa could present themselves to Dume. But when they did, he did not believe that they are Toa. He puts them to the test by making them try to cross the Sea of Protodermis. They failed, and Dume sent Vahki after them. Onewa, Nuju, and Whenua were captured, while Vakama, Nokama, and Matau escaped. The Toa who escaped left through a chute, and found a Vahki Transport headed for Po-Metru. On it, they found strange pods. Vakama had another vision that told him Matoran were inside. In Po-Metru, they had an encounter with Nidhiki and Krekka, who they escaped using Nokama and Matau's newly-discovered mask powers of Illusion and Translation. Then they headed for the prison where the other Toa are being held.

Meanwhile, the other Toa had met a strange Turaga who had taught them how to use their mask powers. When the two groups of Toa met up, they had to fight more Vahki, and Lohrak. Finally, they found a Vahki transport, which they and the Turaga, who revealed himself to be Toa Lhikan as a Turaga, rode to the Coliseum. There, they witnessed the Matoran of Metru Nui being packed away into the pods they saw earlier, and Turaga Dume revealed himself to be Makuta. He absorbed Nidhiki and Krekka and Nivawk, his pet bird Rahi, into himself and transformed, absorbing the energy of Metru Nui and putting the Great Spirit Mata Nui to sleep. Vakama attempted to fight him, and discovered his mask power. He also tried to use the Mask of Time that he made from the Great Disks, but in the end, Turaga Lhikan had to sacrifice himself, and the Toa sealed Makuta in solid protodermis.

Taking six of the Matoran pods, the Toa Metru then headed away from Metru Nui and past the Great Barrier, heading for another island for the Matoran to live on. Eventually, they were attacked by giant sea Rahi, and saved by a Matoran named Mavrah, who was using the Kralhi, banished from Metru Nui after being replaced by Vahki, as his servants. The Kralhi attacked them, and a large battle ensued in which the path back to Metru Nui was sealed off, one of the Matoran pods was lost, and Mavrah drowned. They continued on, reaching a large island that they decided to bring the Matoran to. After exploring the island, they returned to Metru Nui, encountering several mutant beasts on the way.

Along the way, they encountered a Morbuzakh prototype called the Karzahni, named after the place in Matoran legend where bad workers were sent as punishment. It wanted them to get it energized protodermis to transform it into something strong enough to destroy Makuta, the one who abandoned it for being too smart. Being that Nokama was poisoned by an attack from the Rahi Nui and was dying, and the Karzahni had a cure, they had no choice but to comply with its wants. After an encounter with a being made of energized protodermis, they returned. The Karzahni was destroyed by the protodermis, but not before healing Nokama. So the Toa Metru began to make their way back home for the rest of the Matoran.

The ancient city of Metru Nui had been under the attack of the Morbuzakh. The Morbuzakh had invaded the entire district of Ta-Metru while wreaking havoc wherever it went.

Lhikan giving a Toa Stone to Vakama
