Pronunciation

Kraata were a slug-like species created by Makuta from their own essence, with each having one of the many powers Makuta possess as well as the ability to infect Kanohi Masks by touch. As such, there were forty-two breeds of Kraata that could exist, each with its own power and dual coloration. All Kraata went through six stages of life, which changed the arrangement of the features on their head as well as the magnitude of their power. However, there also existed a rare seventh stage that few Kraata entered: Those who did became solid violet, and gained the ability to infect Kanohi from a distance - a power that was only hindered when the Kraata was firmly gripped.

Kraata could transform into Rahkshi armor if immersed in Energized Protodermis, which could then be possessed by a Kraata of the same type.

The island of Mata Nui was once infested by Kraata created by Teridax, and were responsible for most of the infected masks Makuta used to enslave the native Rahi. Over time, the Turaga of the island hunted and captured most of the Kraata in small stasis tubes, and sealed them in a secluded cave on the outskirts of Po-Wahi.

Once, a Kraata was experimented on and exposed to the same energies that turned six Bohrok into Bohrok-Kal. This enhanced Kraata-Kal was sentient, much stronger than regular Rahkshi armor, and went on to join the Dark Hunters.

Shadow Leeches were mutant Kraata created by Mutran to drain a target's moral Light.

A list of all six Kraata stages

Each type of Kraata could go through 6 main stages of growth, but there was also a special seventh stage that few Kraata even had the genetic potential for, much less survive long enough to reach.

  • Stage 1: Kraata was driven completely by instinct.
  • Stage 2: Kraata knew enough to avoid the light.
  • Stage 3: Kraata could avoid capture and had developed its powers.
  • Stage 4: Kraata could withstand sunlight for an hour or so.
  • Stage 5: Kraata knew the Makuta's will.
  • Stage 6: Kraata was fully aware of its mission.
  • Stage 7: Or Shadow Kraata, is capable of infecting targets from a far distance. Shadow Kraata are not identified by their shape but by their color; they can take the shape of any of the previous six stages but are always purple. Most Kraata only develop to Stage 6, thus Shadow Kraata are very rare.

Set Information

The power of Makuta! Each Rahkshi carries with it a part of Makuta's essence called a kraata. These slug-like creatures have the power to infect any Kanohi mask they touch. Kraata evolve though six stages, making the Rahkshi faster and more powerful as they change. Look for all 252 kraata in special Turaga stasis containers. You'll find three randomly packed kraata in each package![1]

  • Kraata were released as a collectible set in the summer of 2003. Each mini-canister contained three randomly-selected different-colored kraata pieces.

Trivia

  • A Shadow Kraata infected two Ta-Matoran during the events of Bionicle: Mask of Light, when Ta-Koro fell to the Rahkshi.
  • A promotional and non-canon transparent orange kraata was included in certain pairs of BIONICLE-themed Nike shoes in 2003.
  • On the Kraata list, "sand yellow metallic," "brick yellow," and "lemon metallic" were LEGO's names for the dark gold, tan, and metallic green, respectively.
