Mangai Volcano was located at the centre of Mata-Nui in Ta-Wahi, harbouring Teridax's lair Mangaia beneath.
Along with the island itself, the Mangai resulted from the Great Cataclysm, when Mata Nui's camouflage systems malfunctioned after falling onto Aqua Magna, disguising his face. Toa Metru Vakama later travelled here, attempting to find a suitable location for the settlement of Ta-Koro. After becoming a Turaga, Vakama crossed with the Ta-Matoran to his decided upon area, initiating village's construction.
Makuta Teridax provoked the Mangai into erupting, a significant threat to the Matoran inhabitants of the surrounding regions. Toa Mata Pohatu and Onua used their respective Kanohi Kakama and Pakari to burrow a ravine, channelling it harmlessly away from the settlements.
The Mangai was near obliterated after the Toa Nuva unintentionally awakened the Bohrok, allowing the swarm to ravage the island.
