2001: Quest for the Masks[]

This year's storyline centered around the Toa's arrival on the island of Mata Nui and their quest to collect the Masks of Power from the Rahi in order to defeat Makuta.

2002: The Bohrok Saga[]

This year's storyline centered around the rise of the Bohrok swarms and the Toa's quest to collect enough krana to unlock enough power to defeat the Bahrag queens. The story ended with the Toa transformed into more powerful Toa Nuva.

2003: The Bohrok-Kal Strike![]

This year's storyline revolved around the arrival of two groups of opponents: the Bohrok-Kal and the Rahkshi. The Bohrok-Kal were elite Bohrok who sought to free the Bahrag. The Rahkshi were "the sons of Makuta," unleashed to steal the Mask of Light. The story ended with the appearance of Takanuva, the defeat of Makuta, and the discovery of Metru Nui.

2004: The City of Legends[]

This year's story centered around Turaga Vakama's tales of the Toa Metru one thousand years ago. To rescue Metru Nui from the rogue Morbuzahk plant, the Toa seek and acquire the Great Disks, only to be betrayed by Makuta and forced to flee the city.

2005: City of Shadows[]

This year's story continued in the form of Vakama's flashbacks to the Toa Metru. This year saw the heroes become transformed into Toa Hordika in their fight against the Visorak spiders. The Toa are aided by the Rahaga in their quest, and eventually return to their original forms and evacuate the Matoran to Mata Nui.

2006: The Island of Doom[]

This year's story returned to the present, and saw the Toa Nuva embark on a new mission: the retrieve the Mask of Life and save the life of Mata Nui. Opposing them are the Piraka, a powerful group of thieves who seek the mask themselves. A new team of Toa appear--the Toa Inika--who successfully defeat the Piraka and claim the Mask of Life.

2007: Sea of Darkness[]

This year's storyline saw the Mask of Life travel to the underwater city of Mahri Nui, where six warlords called Barraki fight over its power. The Toa Inika are transformed into the Toa Mahri in order to fight the Barraki and reclaim the mask. The year ends with Toa Matoro using the mask's power to sacrifice himself in order to revive Mata Nui.

2008: The Battle for Power[]

This year's story sees the Toa Nuva return to the forefront as they journey to Karda Nui in order to fight the Brotherhood of Makuta. The story ends with the Toa Nuva successfully awakening Mata Nui, only to discover that their old enemy Makuta has taken over the Great Spirit's body. Mata Nui's spirit is trapped inside the Mask of Life and banished beyond the Matoran Universe.

2009: Glatorian[]

This year saw a soft reboot for BIONICLE. The story shifted to the desert world of Bara Magna, where Glatorian competed in arena matches for glory. The focus now revolved around the new threat of the Skrall attempting to conquer the planet. Mata Nui and the Mask of Life crash-land on Bara Magna and help stop the invasion. The story ends with Mata Nui intending to travel north and learn more about his past.

2010: Journey's End[]

This year's story saw the conclusion of the original BIONICLE storyline. Makuta travelled to Bara Magna to kill Mata Nui once and for all. Mata Nui returns from his journey north with the power to control a gigantic robot, which he uses to finally defeat Makuta for good and restore the planet of Spherus Magna.
